Summary
I decided to become an auditor to take on a challenging career that would help me grow professionally as I transitioned from school to the workplace. As I gained experience on the job, I have learned to tackle difficult issues confronting our clients’ businesses by developing a wide array of skills that have benefited me greatly as I work cooperatively with co-workers and client personnel during the busy season to finish engagements in an efficient and effective manner. I am currently a senior in charge of audits at the Los Angeles office.
These skills that I have developed as an auditor have enabled me to take on bigger responsibilities and challenges to better serve our clients. Since the field of accounting is always changing to keep up with new laws and standards, I keep my skills up to date through self-study or by taking courses that continue to expand my knowledge. There are always new projects or engagements that require me to learn and gain experience in a new field through research and self-learning. Although a career as an auditor may involve long hours and difficult challenges, it is a very rewarding one that has molded me into someone capable of taking on any future endeavors.
Why I Decided to Become an Auditor
I decided to choose this career because being an auditor exposes one to the diverse set of real-world challenges facing every company. Being an auditor requires me to not only go through the company’s financial information, but also to understand the company’s business and the overall industry that it operates in. As a result, I am able to gain insights into the company’s entire business and structure from top to bottom, making me a better rounded professional. I am also exposed to the importance of cultivating client relationships as I learn how to work with the various people at our clients' companies. Such relationships are important in order for me to better serve our clients.
What Skills I Have Learned
As an auditor, I have developed the following important skills that have helped me to grow both professionally and personally. First, I have learned to communicate effectively, and that teamwork is essential to working with fellow co-workers and client personnel in order to effectively and efficiently finish engagements to meet reporting deadlines. Second, in order to successfully manage several engagements simultaneously, I have become adept at multi-tasking and foreseeing any potential issues that may impact the engagements. Third, as auditors are expected to independently take charge of engagements assigned by supervising staff by informing managers and Partners of engagement progress and issues and working cooperatively with client personnel, I have acquired strong leadership skills. Lastly, being an auditor requires the flexibility to adapt to the constantly changing landscape of accounting. These skills that I have developed and refined over the course of my career have shaped me to become the skilled auditing professional that I am today.
